Why Were Center Caps Built?
Are they center caps, wheel covers or hubcaps? Is there a similarity between them? What was the explanation for them? For that most part, these kinds of queries probably don’t cross most folks mind but, it does raise some curiosity.
Folks that love cars have introduced a love of hubcaps as well. You’ll find those that say the form of the Chrysler Building gives tribute to it.
How did they come about anyway? Hubcaps were necessary. At first, wooden spokes were used on automobiles. They had to be joined together with the outer rim to where the wheel bearing was at in the hub. The wheel bearing was stuffed using grease. A cover was necessary to hold the grease in and dirt out.
Now you know why it was formulated. The center cap was covered while using the little cap as well as the spokes were left open on the elements. Suffice it to say, the spokes didn’t have a extended life. Polished and often decked out with pin striping, age designed them unattractive with cracks. Soon, Cadillac owners realized their hubcaps were in high demand when they were stolen by hot rodders. These hot rodders employed them within the customized automobiles from the 30’s, 40’s and 50’s.
The 1970’s brought the start of the use of plastic hubcaps by automobile manufacturers on the cars. Steel hubcaps were thrown aside during the 80’s and plastic hubcaps persisted on. Plastic routinely makes people think of cheap and very easily broken pieces. That is a falacy with this plastic. The plastic used on hubcaps is weightless, tough and tough. Some weightless hubcaps come right off a car. Keep in mind that automobile manufacturers produce these items that are not all that perfect either. They also come off with ease. It is not enough to have all these things combined though. All hubcaps need an unyielding retention system. A 360 degree, all steel retention ring is the absolute best. It simply holds on to the wheel and holds the hubcap in place.
