Can You Treat Bipolar Disorder?

We toy with depression all the time, either consciously or otherwise; strange how we humans can underestimate something so deadly. Depression is not just an emotion, it is a state of mind that if allowed to persist can result in a myriad of other effects on your body and, yes… your mind. Bipolar disorder is only one of the ways by which depression can hurt you, but that hurt is hurt enough for a lifetime, and not something that you want to live with. Trust me. There are a few types of bipolar disorder you may or may not know of. The type in which you get major depression and hypomanic episodes, or episodes of milder mania is not as common as the other, called cyclothymic disorder, in which your mood alternates between mild depression and mild mania. A rare but not so strange form of it is the rapid-cycling type. And the list goes on. You’d be surprised how many people suffer from these strains all over the world today.

In bipolar disorder things that used to bring you happiness could suddenly turn sour in your mouth and no one would be able to turn that around. But that is only in the first instance. Within a second, all that could turn around and you’d be dancing a jig and singing “ol’ dark ale” tunes, beside yourself with excitement. It’s all just so funny… and frustrating. Switching between joy and sadness is what characterizes bipolar disorder. In certain of these cases, when you experience severe depression, you will likely get some psychotic symptoms as well, to go. Delusions or hallucinations will not be too far away. And when you switch over to the happy side of the Force, dear Lord, may the force be with you, and anyone that is with you at that time! You’d be so beside yourself with excitement, it could be nostalgic.

Perhaps four out of every twenty five folks all over the world get seriously depressed at some point in their lives. Although it is only to be expected that your emotions – even the negative ones – get to overflow every once in a while, letting it get as out of hand as bipolar disorder is a whole new thing, and one that you should learn to live without. Bipolar disorder, like its name, has two sides to it, the depressive and the manic. When depressed, you’d be down on yourself so much you can’t believe it, and when manic you’d feel intensely and inappropriately happy. The mania is actually kind of funny. You get all self-important and irritable, so much you’d have trouble even sleeping. Genuinely, there isn’t any one of the two sides that are pleasant because they can cause you to take some of the strangest actions.

Major depression is the worst type of depression that there is, and it seems to have more than just depression as common ground with bipolar disorder. You see, bipolar disorder has a rather high mortality rate: almost two in every ten cases end up committing suicide. This roughly equals the same instance with cases from major depression. I once saw a fellow make some indecent sexual advances at a lady, and strangely she seemed to fall for it. Then suddenly, as though in a dream, he turned on her and upon himself, berating them both about being unable to do anything about the crumbling world economy. World economy! I mean, where did this guy come from? I hated eavesdropping on their little romantic banter, but by reason of having a shrink as a friend, I knew that this was bipolar disorder in action.
