Boost Your Diet With Brewers Yeast
Brewer’s yeast is made from a one-celled fungus called Saccharomyces cerevisiae and is used in making beer. It also can be grown specifically to make nutritional supplements. Brewer’s yeast is a rich source of minerals, particularly chromium, and an essential trace mineral that helps the body maintain normal blood sugar levels; selenium; protein; and the B-complex vitamins. It tastes bitter and should not be confused with baker’s yeast, nutritional yeast, or torula yeast; all those types of yeast are low in chromium. Brewer’s yeast has been used for years as a nutritional supplement.
Nutritional brewers yeast is often used as a source of B-complex vitamins, and selenium. The B-complex vitamins in brewer’s yeast include B1 (thiamine), B2 (riboflavin), B3 (niacin), B5 (pantothenic acid), B6 (pyridoxine), B9 (folic acid), and H or B7 (biotin). These vitamins help break down carbohydrates, fats, and proteins, which provide the body with energy. They also support the nervous system; help maintain the muscles used for digestion, and keep skin, hair, eyes, mouth, and liver healthy. However, brewer’s yeast does not contain vitamin B12, an essential vitamin found in meat and dairy products; vegetarians sometimes take brewer’s yeast mistakenly believing that it provides B12, which can be lacking in their diet.
Many people have inadequate diets for a variety of reasons: The quality of most foods is poor, we eat too fast, the toxins and stresses in today’s civilization are greater than ever before, our enzyme systems become less effective as we age the strikes against our good nutrition are numerous.
Brewer’s yeast is a great supplement to our diet because it’s a lot of nutrients packed into a small container, and it’s almost pre-digested, in case we don’t break down foods well. In this regard, brewer’s yeast is similar to spirulina, chlorella, green barley extract and blue-green algae (known as ‘phyto-foods’).
Nutritional Yeast contains all the essential amino acids, 14 minerals, and 17 vitamins. It is one of the best natural sources of the B-complex vitamins as well. It is also high in minerals, including chromium, zinc, iron, phosphorus, and selenium. Brewer’s yeast is also a good source of protein. It contains approximately 16 g of protein per 30 g of powdered yeast. Brewer’s yeast is a good source of RNA, an immune-enhancing nucleic acid that may help in the prevention of degenerative diseases and slowing the aging process.
As you can see brewers yeast is an amazing substance and would be a great supplement when added to anybodies diet. Look for brewers yeast in tablet and bulk powder forms. Some find brewers yeast very tasty and others find it a bit repulsive this is where the tablets come in handy. Look for quality name brands like Now Foods and Twin Lab for your brewers yeast needs. Your local or internet health food store will carry inexpensive brewers yeast from the top name brands we all have come to trust.
